I've been waiting a long time for this couple. Galen with his evil, brooding darkness and Legion with soul-crushing pain... I wanted the push and pull of 2 characters seeking love, redemption and healing...What I got? Nothing even close to that. Did Showalter actually write this? What the heckle happened to these characters' personalities?! I honestly didn't know who was "writing" in the prologue almost all the way through. Who the H was that? Not the Galen we've come to love to hate. I seriously thought it was a cross-over Valkyrie character from Kresley Cole.
This couple had such wonderful wrenching setups in the previous novels (hate, betrayal, lust, agony, etc.) and this book basically ignored all that emotional investment I had in the characters to go with some flighty light lust romp with no depth, no character develop, just ugh!
So very, very disappointed. And sad to say I want my $2.99 back

The Darkest Captive A Lords of the Underworld Novella edition by Gena Showalter Romance eBooks Reviews
I’ve been waiting for this book for years. Throughout those years, some of the character choices, plots, and writing style made me question my commitment to the book series and the author. Even though I read most of the books in this series and most of the books in the spinoff series, honestly, I had given up a few years back. I was so happy when I recently tried one of Gena’s books again and was extremely excited to see the announcement of this book. I did have to fight my disappointment that it is a novella. I feel strongly that Legion/Honey and Galen deserved their own full length novel. However, here I am, a satisfied customer even though I wish the book was longer so we could’ve taken more time with both characters.
Thank you Gena for your commitment to your readers. I highly recommend this book especially if you have been a longtime fan.
I have been waiting a long time for Galen and Legion's story. I wanted a full length novel as these two are complicated characters who I imagined would have a complicated relationship. The Darkest Captive wasn't everything I was hoping for but I enjoyed reading it. I really enjoyed the beginning of the story, as we got to know these characters again. Galen was the larger than life villain of this series for so long and I expected him to be much meaner and worse. I feel like he lost some of himself when he fell in love with Legion and not in a good way. I wanted him to still be the Galen we all know and hate but suddenly start loving because of the way he loved Legion. I'm not sure if that even makes sense but I just expected more from Galen in this book. With that said, I still loved this story because I wanted this to happen and Gena did!
I have been waiting for Galen and Legion's story for what seems like forever now and Gena Showalter did not disappoint!! To Galen Legion is the one who got away and he is determined to have her again. And while she is very much attracted to him, she has become a shell of herself due to horrors in her recent past. However, Galen is determined to help her overcome her fears and try to recover the person she once was. This story has action, passion, and plenty of heat to go around. I highly recommend this book even if you haven't read the previous Lords of the Underworld books.
As always, Showalter’s has proven herself a master storyteller of the paranormal romance genre. Despite being already deep in a well established series, “The Darkest Captive” can easily be enjoyed as a standalone. However, there is a certain satisfaction that long time fans will receive from finally having Legion and Galen’s story.
There has been much build up to this story, and while Showalter does not disappoint, she could have easily made this into a full length novel. Many readers and long time fans may be disappointed that such dynamic characters had their story cut short to a novella. Both leads have complex personalities and complicated fleshed out stories that span across the series. Watching their story unfold was both a delight and a sorrow.
Overall, the story is a must read for fans of paranormal romance, whether they have read Showalter’s Lords of the Underworld series or not. Filled with detailed mythology, heart wrenching romance, and Showalter’s trademark wit, “The Darkest Captive” is the perfect Christmas gift for PNR reader’s everywhere.
While I loved certain aspects of the story, I was expecting more from the love story of Galen and Legion (Leila, Honey). Yes, there was romance, comedy, surprising developments, but many times I felt as if the story was just thrown together to get their coupling done and over with.
While I loved seeing familiar faces (Sabin, Gwen, Olivia, Aeron, William and so on), the fight scenes were cut too short. Gena is known for epic fight scenes but this time around I found them lacking.
Would I recommend this novella to others? Sure, any fan of the LOTU should read this. We all need our LOTU fix. However, The Darkest Captive won’t blow you away (IMHO). With that said, she did set us up for a showdown between Fox and the Elite Angels. That storyline peaks my interest….
I was waiting for this book since I've read Aeron's and Olivia's (which is my favorite of the series) and what a let down this was.
I'm a voracious reader. I have read Kenyon's Acheron and Styxx within 24 hours while getting stuff done in between, but this novella took me almost a week to finish because it was so bleh. I thought about DNFing it, but I managed to get through it.
This book is dull. With all the battles and sex this little piece of book is still somehow so boring I had to keep taking breaks and reading other books in between.
At least I got some Aeron and Olivia for my troubles.
I can't even think of anything constructive to add. It's just the same rehashed LOTU story with different names. These characters are not true to what was written previously. I wanted Galen to be different and he wasn't. Neither was Legion. I wanted more of everything. This book lacks heart and I am not buying any more of these books until I'm assured that I'm getting my money's worth.
