I have to say, I was a bit apprehensive when Steve first mentioned that he was going to write a series in the Hellequin universe that didn't feature Nate. While I enjoyed the first book, A Glimmer of Hope, I still didn't find it quite as good as the Hellequin books. Then I read A Flicker of Steel and thought, Wow, this is really good! It drew me in and I found myself really excited about the third book, A Thunder of War.Steve hit it out of the ballpark! This third book was so good that I put it right up there with the best of the Hellequin series. What an incredible story. I highly recommend this book and just can't say enough good things about it.

A Thunder of War The Avalon Chronicles Book 3 edition by Steve McHugh Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
I have read all of this author's Hellequin books as well as this new series so far. This latest installment in the Avalon Chronicles does not disappoint. The battle scenes have good imagery without dragging on too long, and even the minor characters have clearly defined personalities. I especially enjoy the dialogue between the core characters and how they relate to one another. The author has my sense of sarcastic humor! I think the book is overall a good read and a great escape from reality for a few hours; I would recommend starting at book one of the Hellequin Chronicles, and reading all of Steve's 10 books.
I read the whole series because it was a distraction and I was a bit fascinated with some of the first book. But in the end there are so many characters, so many different types of magic and so may locations that I couldn't remember any of it or tell if was accurately connected. In the end it seemed it was about how many ways characters could be killed. The description that there was so much blood on the ground it was almost to slick to stand up sums it up.
Book 3 of the Avalon Chronicles is so good. I loved the way the war kept building til at the end all Hel broke loose. Layla is becoming quite the badass, as she homes her skills. Her comfort , and confidence with her powers is very cool. I am looking forward to book three, and hopefully the return of Nate.
Just ... freakin’ amazing. I started one Avalon book in the middle, and two paragraphs in, knew I needed to start from the beginning - with Nate Garrett. I have never regretted the time invested. Every story, every life, every death (except those of the blood elves) means so much, such a rich imagination on paper. I am glad I do not bleed with the characters, but I certainly do laugh and cry with them. I am hard-pressed to put any of McHugh’s works down. Hurry up with 11 already!!
This was a satisfying ending to the Avalon Chronicles trilogy and Layla’s story. I eagerly anticipated this book and wasn’t disappointed. The author writes very well and I am so glad he continues to put out books.
In fact, the first novel in this trilogy, “A Glimmer of Hope,” was the first novel I had read by Mr. McHugh. It was a free Prime book of the month. Free fantasy - who could resist! I was so impressed with it, and the world that was built, that I immediately bought (and read) all the books in the Hellequin Chronicles. And I am now an avid fan of Mr. McHugh and will continue to buy books he publishes.
That said - in the author’s next book? Nate’s coming back! Who-hoo.
If you're here you either have been following this series or something about the synopsis pinged your interest. If the former, McHugh has not only maintained his usual excellence I do believe he has become a better writer than ever. If something interests you about the Hellequin/Avalon series, start with number one in the series and go hog wild. It's a thrill ride you won't regret taking!
I really enjoyed the 1st book of the series and was looking forward book #2. But almost from the start I was confused. The characters started talking about things they did in the last two years (between book 1 and book 2) and the events that affected them. I had no idea what they were talking about. In fact I double checked that I was reading book 2. I read further and double check that A Glimmer of Hope was actually book 1 and not book .05. It wasn't . Throughout the whole book I would get confused. I enjoyed the story but did not appreciate all the references to previous situations that I know nothing about. Because I enjoyed the story still I picked up book 3, A Thunder of War. Once again I find myself reading about things that I haven't read about. I quit there. I won't buy another book in this series.
