This is a pleasant, enjoyable book about what happens to a young woman whose formative years had too many surprises...none of them pleasant. Now that she is pushing thirty she expects life to conform to the "rules," and she has no desire to step out of her box. Her views are challenged when her aunt, who raised her for much of her childhood, gives her a trip to Europe with her kooky friends, which will ultimately end up at a Sudoku tournament. When her aunt forces her to go she learns a lot about life, death, and what happens in between. Although the story is predictable, it is well written and plotted and makes a great beach read!Tags : A Summer In Europe [Marilyn Brant] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. On her thirtieth birthday, Gwendolyn Reese receives an unexpected present from her widowed Aunt Bea: a grand tour of Europe in the company of Bea's Sudoku and Mah-jongg Club. The prospect isn't entirely appealing. Picked it up at a book sale before my trip to Ireland. Read it on the plane and give it to my mom, who only got to chapter 2 before she forgot it in a hotel. Was so sad that I gave her the version and she's finished it. Cute story, easy reading, not greatly profound or deep, but great for vacation reading. Predictable ending.
I enjoyed this book, interesting characters in interesting locales. More thought was put into this novel than the average 2-bit romance.
Marilyn Brant's latest release was such a great escape for me this holiday season. In between wrapping presents, shopping, cleaning, cooking, etc, I took a little time each day to savor this book. It transported me to places I've never been. The writing is vivid, the characters are colorful and I absolutely loved the ending. It feels like a modern day "Room With A View." I promise, you won't be disappointed!
I'm finding it difficult to put into words how truly beautiful this book is. We are taken on a journey through Europe, but we are also taken on a journey of discovery. As we learn about Europe, the main character, Gwen, learns about so much more. The book has complex characters and themes that are cleverly combined with humor. The end result is a book that is profound, moving, and entertaining. I have read all but one of Marilyn Brant's books, and I have loved them all. However, I think A Summer in Europe is her best work to date. This is most likely the best book I will read this year.
Really great book that makes you wish you would have had this kind of life altering (with or without the guy)trip when you were younger. Great "finding yourself and what you want" book. The characters keep you off balance near to the end so you have to keep reading to see whether they will live up to their potential or allow their fears to hold them back. Additionally the description of the travels through Europe almost make you feel as if you are there. Super characters, great writing. Love all of Marilyn Brant's books I have read, each having a very distinct impact, making me thing about myself and how I react to my world.
This is a simple story told in a wonderful and complex style. It's long, but there isn't an extra word anywhere. The author, Marilyn Brant, leads the reader in a journey through Europe with Gwendolyn Reese and a group of American and British tourists. You know how you see description of tourist spots and your eyes tend to jump, or glaze over? NOT in this book, because each description is so ingrained with emotions that the very street (or canal) becomes an integral piece of the story. Now, that's writing talent! At the bottom, it's a romance, but also a 'coming-of-age' (at thirty!). And definitely a story of adventure, mystery, every-day-life, age differences---but that's what I brought to it. Maybe you will bring something else.
Okay, I loved this book. Maybe you will to.
This was my first book. This was a book that I hated to see end and wouldn't mind at all seeing a sequel appear on bookshelves someday. The author built her characters well and made them believable, without overdoing their flaws or life challenges. Some books lead you to basically know how they are going to end but take a long time getting there, usually through too much back-and-forth thought process of the characters? Marilyn Brant did not do that. There was no place where I found myself skimming over a section to get back to the main gist of the story. I would not call this a fluff book at all. I grew to like, and care about, each character. She made them unique individuals. I liked it so much that I am also purchasing it for my home bookshelf as it is a book I could see myself reading again down the road and lending it to friends to enjoy. Sadly it has made getting my interest into the current book I am reading hard and slow going! My thanks to Marilyn Brant for writing a book that I consider one of my all time favorites.
