I suspect I would have loved this book, had the least bit of attention been paid to the Kindle version. However, as it is, it is completely indecipherable. Put simply, if this is the best that can be done, there should be no Kindle version of this book sold.Tags : Sea Prayer [Dan Williams (illustrator) Khaled Hosseini] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers.,Dan Williams (illustrator) Khaled Hosseini,Sea Prayer,Bloomsbury Publishing PLC,1526602717
Sea Prayer Dan Williams illustrator Khaled Hosseini 9781526602718 Books Reviews
I remember the photograph of the little boy’s corpse on the sand. It was shown often on the news. The author wrote a poem about the little boy and his family. All proceeds go to a cause to help refugees. Not only did I read the poem and savor the illustrations, but also I took it to the elementary school where I volunteer for teachers to read to the students. It is very touch and descriptive. Quite beautiful in its simplicity.
Powerful images with powerful words. It stirs your heart in a way that sticks with you more than the news you see will.
Like many other reviewers here, I too preordered this book back in May and expected a full fledged novel on the refugee crisis; however, that was my folly as I overlooked the description stating it was indeed a short story. I am still glad I purchased it. To me, Hosseini's writing alone is money well spent, and the fact that he is donating his proceeds to UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, and his foundation is a huge plus.
That being said, I enjoyed this book, a father's letter to his son Marwan before their perilous journey across the sea. Dan Williams's watercolor images beautifully coincide the father's descriptions of his childhood, Homs, and the events leading to their departure. Toward the end, I unexpectedly teared up (didn't think this would happen considering I knew for months what I would be getting myself into). Hosseini's ability to describe feelings, locations, experiences with few words is what makes his writing powerful, and he does that again with this book.
The message here is great, but the author set the bar very high with his prior works. I was shocked by the brevity of the book and the cost. Hopefully a big chunk of the money paid in fact goes to help refugees. The format of the book is also terribly difficult to read on a kindle or on the kindle app on a small screen device. Recommend using a tablet to read. Overall, this is a fine book, but took just 10 minutes to read. Disappointing is the best way to describe my feelings afterwards.
I had no idea this was a picture book with few words. For a few cents less, I could have purchased it in its hard back version, but the shipping was not free unless I ordered more items. It is a moving book, very sad, with beautiful illustrations--which I could view after moving it from my Paper-White over to my old Fire; but I would not have ordered as I did if I had known more about the book.
Since I didn't bother to read the description or reviews before I ordered this, I expected to sink my teeth into another enthralling Hosseini novel! Disappointed at first, then read the book and was very touched by it. It has a very powerful message. The image of that poor little boy on the beach is one that will never leave me and should never leave anyone who has seen it. The fact that proceeds from the sale of this book will go to refugee organizations is especially heart-warming. Before you blast the author for "ripping you off" stop, think about little Alan Kurdi, and examine your heart and soul.
I was so excited for this book. I preordered months and months ago. I, like so many others, was expecting more. I opened the box and was disappointed at the size and that it looked more like a children’s book.
But I should have known better. There’s a reason Khalid Hosseini is one of my favorite authors. No, this wasn’t what I was expecting but it was beautiful, the writing and the illustrations, it was meaningful, and it gets its point across.
I was hoping for more but am satisfied with what I received. I’ll still be waiting for his next book though with great anticipation!
I suspect I would have loved this book, had the least bit of attention been paid to the version. However, as it is, it is completely indecipherable. Put simply, if this is the best that can be done, there should be no version of this book sold.
